From that day on, I was more focused on Chippie. I might not have known where Stan was at any given moment, but I knew where Chippie was. The minute he dropped out of view for any reason at all, I would frantically leap from my seat—“Where’s the dog?”

At the same time, Stan transformed into Superboy. Instead of throwing his bike on the lawn, he leaned it against a tree. He helped with the dishes. He took out the garbage. He even got ready for bed, smiled, and said good night without our prodding. I suspected his guilty conscience was at play—and so did Vern—but we wanted a break from conflict, so we simply noted it and continued.

I felt sure that the truth, like a dead body hurled into the ocean, would eventually wash up on the beach.
